Howest-IPO-studenten winnen twee OVAM Ecodesign Awards op WONDER 2025
Tijdens het WONDER Festival in Kortrijk behaalden twee studententeams van Industrieel Productontwerpen (IPO) een OVAM Ecodesign Award — een nationale erkenning voor duurzaam en vernieuwend ontwerp.
een Human Interest award met FIGS – lokaal vakmanschap en slow design
In de categorie ‘Human Interest’ won Liesbeth Nilsen met haar project FIGS: een handgemaakte serveerset uit lokaal resthout van bosbeheer of stormschade. Zelfs de houtkrullen worden hergebruikt als verpakkingsmateriaal.
Deze IPO-alumna begon haar stage bij een ambacht’s persoon — een keuze die op het eerste gezicht haaks stond op industrieel ontwerpen, maar precies dat spanningsveld werd haar kracht.
FIGS combineert duurzaamheid, economie en ambacht: een alternatief voor massaproductie dat lokaal vakmanschap herwaardeert en bewustwording creëert rond materiaalgebruik en slow design. De jury prees haar inzet en de sterke koppeling tussen traditie en toekomstgericht ontwerpen.

een Business Potential award met U:NIT Powerstation – ecodesign in actie
Vier studenten — Michael Moyson, Tuur Verhuele, Rune Vanhoucke en Aeon Bonjé — wonnen in de categorie ‘Business Potential’ met het U:NIT Powerstation.
Jurgen Ceuppens - Lector Industrieel Productontwerpen: “Met meerdere prototypes en focus op techniek creëerden ze een robuust, gebruiksvriendelijk powerstation dat energie levert én bijdraagt aan een circulaire toekomst.”
Het project lost een herkenbaar probleem op: e-bikebatterijen worden vaak weggegooid door één defect onderdeel, terwijl sommige cellen nog perfect bruikbaar zijn. De studenten hergebruikten deze cellen in een modulair, herstelbaar powerstation, met robuuste behuizing en uitneembare powerunits die individueel functioneel en herstelbaar zijn. Zelfs oude verkeersborden werden opnieuw ingezet als metaalbron.
U:NIT combineert hergebruik, modulariteit en herstelbaarheid met verbondenheid en samenwerking — een sterk voorbeeld van circulair ontwerp dat zowel technisch als sociaal impactvol is.
